On the eve of the US Civil War, the Southern leaders knew they had one large advantage. US President Lincoln was in charge of a divided Union. Many in the North had no wish to have an armed conflict.Lincoln, because 3 other candidates were in the race, had 3 other Democratic opponents. Thus, he won but with only 31% of the vote.
With the Union uncertain as how to handle this situation, it was then, some weeks before Fort Sumter that the wealthy economy of the South could have been used as some type of bargaining tool to avoid a war. Simple commonsense of avoiding a terrible loss of wealth gave the South time to negotiate, not assault the North's Fort Sumter.
Home ground advantage. The North had the task of doing the invading.
The Confederates (South)
How did white landowners in the south reassert their economic power in the decade following the civil war?
the construction of railroads (from studyisland)
Prior to the formal outbreak of the American Civil War, a variety of developments gave the North a decided advantage over the South once hostilities erupted. A larger population (and thus the potential for a larger army) was one advantage. Tremendously greater industrial capacity along with a sophisticated and more numerous navy (and merchant fleet) were two others. The existence of an organized and operational federal administrative body was yet another advantage.
The North had the greater economic resources as it was industrialised while the South relayed on a slave and cotton economy.
The North's biggest advantage was its industrial might. The rural and agricultural South couldn't keep up.
Was it the carpetbaggers.
Although the north had an economic advantage over the south due to the industries the north faced an economic problems because they did not have a home front advantage such as the south. Furthermore the south lacked two economic advantages. One was the central goverment which would not let them tax the states. And inflation occurred causing more problems including the unity of the states. -11th grader from APUSH
Most advantages, economic and otherwise, favored the North
They were called Carpetbaggers.
The US had been split into the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South)
In the US Civil War, the North had the advantage in population and industry. The South had the advantage of better officers, and that they were defending their homes.
Transportation systems were more developed in the North than in the South.
The main economic factors that impacted the war and the final surrender of the South can be said to rely on the industrial power of the North. The South could not match the size of Northern armies and the industrial base that supported them. The South's basic dependence on its agricultural economy, even when some new industries were created, was not enough to sway the direction of the war to the North's advantage.
Home ground advantage. The North had the task of doing the invading.
In the US Civil War, the South had a number of advantages. Perhaps one of the best ones was the fact that they did not have to conquer the North to win. Their goal for independence would come when the North no longer wished to continue the conflict.
