In 1860 and by the end of May 1861, eleven Souther slave holding US states announced their secession from the Union and formed a new nation called the Confederate States of America. These states left the Union because they believed that their way of life and their influence in the US government was threatened. They feared that sooner or later, despite all assurances from US President Lincoln, that they would be marginalized.
