The younger generation of Spain dislike Franco, As a youth in the 1970's, I was an American with a Spanish family and grew up in Barcelona and Madrid. What Franco tried to do was to protect his citizens. In my opinion he kept the bad elements out of his country. His socialist views worked for the country during the time period he was in charge. Increasingly, we would see factions like the ETA that wanted to be separated from Spain. Franco would not allow that. Franco also disallowed the Catalonians in Barcelona to speak their language and enjoy their culture. Today, in Barcelona, one would be hard pressed to find anyone or anything in the Castillian language. They wanted to secede from Spain after Franco's death, but parliament knowing it Barcelona to be an economic boom for Spain, said no.

Franco today, in general, in Spain is viewed very negatively. But I see it different because I remember the Spain of his time being clean, running smoothly without the influx of South American criminals that have come into the country lately. Franco's protection of his country and his people are long gone. The country is not doing so well anymore without him.
