Grant and Lee signed the end of the Civil War.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Virginia to the Union General Grant, thus ending the fighting in Virginia. Most of the other Confederate soldiers laid down their arms and went home, too. However, a few generals continued to fight for a few weeks. This surrender officially ended the Civil War and Grant's lienency paved the way for how the Southern states would be received back into the Union.

Grant and Lee signed the end of the Civil War

IMPROVED ANSWER:

Both Lee and Grant met at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.

Grant allowed the Confederate soldiers to return home, after vowing never to raise arms against the United States of America.

Confederate soldiers had to surrender their arms and artillery. The Confederate officers were allowed to keep their guns and swords.

The Confederate soldiers were allowed to keep their horses or mules to take back home, to help raise crops.

Lee did not offer his sword in defeat; Grant never asked for it.

Although the two great military leaders fought on opposite sides of the war. General Grant had great admiration and respect for General Robert E. Lee.

General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General U.S. Grant on April 9, 1865. This did not end the U.S. Civil War as other units were still engaged in combat throughout the country. The loss of the Army of Northern Virginia certainly helped bring about the end of the war.
