The Jews of Kiev were taken to a ravine called Babi Yaroutside the city, marched up to the edge and machine-gunned. About 33,000 were killed: it was the biggest single massacre that the Nazis committed and last for some days.

Before the Holocaust Odessa had a large, flourishing Jewish community. The city was taken by Romanian forces (which, for the most part, were rabidly anti-Jewish). A bomb exploded and it was simply taken for granted that "the Jews" were responsible - and they were massacred.
