Manufactured some blockade-running vessels that were sent to the Confederates via other agents, though it was well-known who they were really from.

In the Summer of 1862, the British came close to granting official recognition to the Confederacy and sending troops. Lincoln was so worried about this that he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, ostensibly changing his war aims and turning the struggle into a crusade against the evils of slavery. This shamed Britain (and France) into staying out of it, for fear of looking pro-slavery themselves.
