It's presumably either the original or designed from the theatre in Epidaurus in Greece.
It's an open air theatre with incredible acoustics (even the back row can hear the actors without difficulty or undue strain on actors' voices). It's the ancient Greek equivalent of the Roman Colosseum in Rome - their crowning achievement in sites meant for public presentations (a lot less violent a place, too).

The biggest amphitheater in the Roman empire was the Colosseum.

The men, as they were the only people allowed to be actors at the time. Intially at the birth of greek theatre there were only two characters, but that grew to three, with the addition of a chorus. The masks were used to help them project their voice to the back of the ampitheatre as well as the masks having expressions on them so they can be seen from the back too

The Greeks and then the Romans built ampitheaters so, yes they did. As far as using them I don't think they did.
Many of the wild animals in Roman amphitheaters were from Africa, but they also got animals from other parts of the Roman Empire.
The Gibson ampitheatre has tickets available on the internet, and if it is local, you can probably go directly to the theatre or through local sales to buy tickets.

They built up the city of Rome. Many things we consider Roman were actually first built by them, such as aqueducts, smaller versions of the Flavian Ampitheatre, ect.
