Night patrols were groups o soldiers ( normally 7 men) who •searched no-man's land for survivors of previous attacks, and skirmished with enemy night patrols, as well as raiding enemy trenches, with the hope of capturing enemy soldiers or documents for intelligence purposes.

It was really scary and was done when it was dark, hence the words 'night patrol.' 5 men could be ordered by their officer to do it, two men on either side, three in the middle. The aim is to capture and interigate the Germans, and kill them. Basically to find out what they were up to. Before you went 'over the top,' you had to remove anything that could identify you in case you got caught. You crawled over the top on your stomach so you were not seen. Flares, (kind of like a firework) could be set off and they light no mans land up, so it was EXTREMELY important you stayed VERY STILL! You had to act as if you were dead, so the snipers don't shoot you. If you got chose for night patrol, you would be dreading it.

Hope this helped xx :)
