A polis was a Greek city-state. It was the standard state of the Greek world - there were a couple of thousand of them, each with their own independent government, social structure and economy. The more successful ones flourished and became the leaders which were copied by other cities.

Each polis had a city surrounded by farming land. The city was usually fortified and became the centre of security in the incessant wars between cities. They also contained temples, markets, gymnasiums and theatres. They were the centre of life.

The Polis were like our major cities or national capitals to the ancient Greeks: they were the centers of trade, politics, culture, and military strength.
