Americans used mainly French machine guns such as the 8mm 1914 Hotchkiss mg and the Chauchat (light machine gun) which was apparently very unreliable due to grit and mud jamming the gun. The reason America had such great machine guns from then on, was the need to have their own machine guns but also to eliminate French unreliability.
