Bullet-proof vests, known more officially as "ballistic vests", come in a variety of strengths. The more impact a vest is rated to absorb, the heaver it tends to be. The lightest vests are made of laminated Kevlar, and are called "soft" vests (though they are in fact very stiff). These are the vests which police and private security officers commonly wear. Soft vests will absorb only small caliber handgun or shotgun rounds. Larger rounds may penetrate the vest and cause significant injury, or they may stop on the vest but cause blunt force trauma injuries. "Hard" vests use the same laminated Kevlar for the interior of the vest, but contain insert pockets for metal or ceramic plates to better protect vital organs. Metal inserts are better suited to protecting the wearer against slashing, such as from knives or high-velocity metal fragments (such as from a grenade). Ceramic inserts slow down or stop high-energy projectiles such as high-caliber rifle rounds by shattering when they are hit. This spreads out the energy of the projectile and stops it from penetrating the body of the wearer.
kevlar, small threaded metallic sheets of metal,a new type of foam that can absorb and redistribute movement through the whole vest.
The standard for now is Kevlar on the outside and a metal or ceramic material inside . However there are develovments in the field that may soon be implemented. such as nanocomposit's , such as carbon nano tubes which are flexable yet stronger then steal. and nano particles that when in ain a relaxed state is a gell but when hit with kinetic energy stiffins up to the point of stopping the bullet.
