A dog robber is an aide to a military officer.

Military dog tags were first introduced during the American Civil War. At this time the tags were sometimes no more than a piece of paper pinned to a soldier's uniform.
The slight cutout or "nick" is to line up and hold the dog tag for stamping purposes. A rumor that the nick was used to drive the dog tag into the teeth of the dead soldier was just that, a rumor.
yhea.
The purchase of military dog tags are fairly easy and many online retailers provide the service. WWII dog tags are different from modern ones in that they have a notch in them. Modern tags do not. Also, a Soldier from WWII would have a service number listed instead of their SSN. You would have to look at content (what's printed on the tag), size, material and overall wear of the tag to help establish age and authenticity.
