As the name suggests a Firestep was where a rifle was fired from. It was part of thre trench that was stood on to see over the parapet. It was raised from the level of the trench which was used as cover from view by the enemy.
The trenches were deep enough to allow soldiers to move about without being shot. So if they wanted to look out to see what the enemy were doing they needed a step to stand on. This was the firestep, constructed at the front of the trench, which also allowed them to fire at the enemy in the trench opposite.
What size? Assuming 1/48 or 1/72 scale, a board about 2 ft square, built up with foam board, glued together to make a stack about 6" high, then cut out the trenches with a knife, sand down to get smooth, then cover with plaster of Paris or other media. Add timbers made of balsa wood, then paint. Find pictures of what you want to duplicate, then try to re-create that look.AnswerUse foam for the "body" of the model, with plywood for the base and frame of the model. Cut the trench in the foam, and cut the foam's surface with clay or paper mache. Adding replica sand bags and logs are fine details, and cotton balls, when painted appropriately, make fine smoke clouds and explosions.odel soldiers add grealty to the model as well. For a full-scale model take a shovel and dig a ditch in your back yard.make a board out of wood and pollistainrine and carve out the trences
The ridge of a trench is the parapet.
Fire steps were built on the parapet (side of the trench facing the enemy) which allowed soldiers to step up and fire over the tops of the trench.

This was the firestep, constructed at the front of the trench, which also allowed them to fire at the enemy in the trench opposte.

duckboards on the bottomthen theres the firing step for them to stand on when shooting then the ammunition shelf where they keep boxes of ammo and grenades and stuff which they use when they go over the top into no mans land
In trench warfare, you wanted to be low enough in the trench that you would not be hit by a bullet when moving about, but that meant you were too low to see out and shoot back. When building a trench, a ledge known as a firing step was built in. You could step up onto the firing step, and see out (and shoot)

Well, it would probaly look zigzaggy as not all the trenches were built straight, this was to prevent major damage from the enemey soldiers. Try to imagine a tree with spread out branches. improvement: Here is an example http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWtrenchsystem.htm also their were michine guns around the trench
