World War 1, also known as the great war, began in 1914 and ended in 1918. It first began after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferndinand, the presumptive heir to the Austirian-Hungary throne. The Bosnian serbs killed Ferndinand hoping to separate south-Slav provinces to reunite into Yugoslavia. This eventually led to retaliation when they entered land but intruding into foreign land spread fear of dominance of other countries eventually leading to war. The two main groups in the war consisted of the Allies and Central Powers. This war only lasted long because of the advanced industrialization of militarily weapons and transportation as well as the inability to stop the war.

The Great War (or, World War I) may be briefly summarized as follows: Following the assassination of an important Austro-Hungarian leader, several Balkan nations engaged in hostilities. Quite soon, all of the major powers in Europe entered the conflict via the alliance-system that dominated Europe at the time. After several years of static fighting, one major power (Imperial Russia) dropped out of the conflict only to be replaced by another (the United States). Through fatigue and in the face of the rising power of their enemies, the Central Powers soon collapsed, leading to a long-overdue (and, in fact, ultimately indecisive) conclusion to the conflict as a whole.
