The strengths and weaknesses of the World War I alliance system are many. As just one example on the strength side, it provided each combatant with the confidence that it could enter war with reliable support. In contrast (and as just one example on the weakness side), this same confidence bred over-confidence: the presence of allies led a number of combatants to see the erupting conflict as an "easy" war that would bring quick victory.
