On the other hand, the Confederacy was forced to design a separate battle flag in order to diminish confusion between sides during a battle. There were many versions of battle flags, but the Virginia flag is the most notorious. This particular flag is now understood as a symbol of the Confederacy and is highly criticized to this day. The flag had a solid red background, and two blue diagonal stripes across the plane that form an X. The X was outlined with white, and the white 13 stars were in the interior of the stripes.
. in the early months of '61,early US flags & the bonnie blue flag(all blue w/ 1 star) was unafficially used by CS troops. when their gov. was officially established, the CSA government in '61 began use of a flag similar to the first US flag enstead with 7 stars for the orriginal 7 cofederate states. may '61- 2 stars added, jul '61- 2 more stars, and from nov '61 to may '63, there were 13 stars. on may of '63, the stainless flag was introduced which was the common battle flag we all know with a large white space surrounding the bottom and right of the battle flag, and in '65 the national flag of the CSA was the blood stained banner which was similar but with a thick red stripe at the far right of the flag. the common battle flag we know is one varient of 180 flags used by cs military, one common flag is the "don't tread on me" banner. the first CSN flag was in '61 & all blue w/ 7 stars, half way through the war, the naval jack was used by CSN and was essentially the confederate flag of today, except with much lighter blue, the CS used most banners that were used in the American revolution because they were in the same situation where the rights of local governments were taken away.
the self-declared Confederate enclave of town line, New York, lacking a genuine Confederate flag, flew a version of the common battle flag prior to its 1945 vote to rejoin the Union. in ww2 it was popularly used by marines in the south pacific until it was seen as inappropriate cause "Americans everywhere are in the war". the use of the flag afterwards is contriversial and represents many things such as racism, national socialism, Christianity, ku klux klahn, states rights, secession, ect. The confed. flag we know today had never represented the nation as a whole and is used in many US state flags.
Yes, the federal government cannot pass a law that infringes upon a person's right to free speech -- and displaying the confederate flag is a form of free speech. However, a government CAN remove images of the confederate flag from government property (i.e., redesigning state flags that include the stars and bars, etc.) Since the confederate flag has racist connotations, it would not be unreasonable for states to remove the confederate flag from statehouses and other government property. Private citizens could still fly the confederate flag exactly the same way that they are still allowed to display swastikas without government interference.
