They started killing people for who they were (like gypsy's, Jewish, mentally handicapped, etc.) and when Germany invaded Poland that started a war. The US didn't want to get involved until the bombing of Pear Harbor by the Japanese. WW2 was a war over ideology, basic human rights, and the balance of power in Europe.
The main reason was that the politicians had decided that war was the best course of action and they ordered the armed forces into combat. There was no great patriotic fervour like in World War One where people were rushing to enlist and though in the Soviet Union it is called the Great Patriotic War, people were still forced to fight.
Hitler, leader of the Germans and head of the Nazi party, was a nationalist and wanted Germany to regain her leadership of Europe that had been lost in World War One. So he secretly built up the German Army,Navy and Air Force and then set about increasing Germany's power by taking over the neighbouring countries one by one, either by stealth, agreement or force. This worried the British, French and Russians quite a lot. So they said "no more... or else" but he ignored them and invaded Poland. You know the rest- Bang, Crash, Kaboom - World War Two.
The Allied Forces fought to defeat the evil Nazis who were committing atrocious, brutal crimes against millions of Europeans. They also fought against the Japanese in an act of revenge and to free China and other places the Japanese had invaded.
