The battle which you allude to is the Union pursuit of Maury's Confederate garrison from Mobile Alabama to Montgomery. Union troops had assaulted the forts around Mobile on 9 April 1865. causing the Confederates to abandon that seaport. They marched to Montgomery and garrisoned that town, not surrendering until ordered to do so by General Kirby Smith, overall commander of the Trans Mississippi Confederacy, on 4 May 1865. In addition there were skirmishes in Texas up until the end of May 1865. Kirby Smith and his Trans-Mississippi Department did not officially surrender until 30 May 1865 to General Canby of the Union Army.
