I don't know if the first plane can be identified. John Dolittle's raid consisted of B-25B's that took off from carriers and dropped bombs on 18 April 1942 over numerous cities in Japan, before landing in China. Only two of the planes had names, The Ruptured Duck and The Bat.

The plane is named Bockscar because it was named after Captain Frederick C. Bock, to whom the plane was originally assigned. The reason Sweeney flew the bomber was due to a mix-up with outfitting the various planes for the bombing mission. Bockscar was supposed to be equipped with instruments and flown by Brock. It was, instead, equipped to drop the atomic bomb. Since it was Sweeney who trained to drop the bomb, it was he who flew it.

It was April 0f 1942 just months after Pearl Harbor. The Mitchell was the only bomber to be able to fly off the carrier hornet and reach Japan when stripped down and with exra fuel. One limiting factor is the wing needing to clear the "island"on the carrier. Because they were spotted they launched 200 miles further out than planned. The plan was to fly to friendly bases in China after the attack but most ran out of fuel. Militarily the raid did nothing but for moral it was a boost and also a warning Japan can be gotten.to.
