Corregidor was the Pacific island fortress that fell to Japan in May of 1942. This island was on the located on Manila Bay and was held by Americans until May 6, 1942.
Island hopping was a technique used in WWII. Japan had troops stationed on islands in the Pacific. Instead of engaging the garrisons the navy would skip the island and atttack the next one, basically stranding the Japanaese garrisons on the islands until the end of the war.

It was New Guinea in early to mid 1942 as part of the Kokoda Track campaign. Subsequently Guadalcanal, from August 1942 into early 1943 was a major Allied victory in the Solomon Islands campaign. Even though it was a comparatively early success, it led inexorably to the defeat and surrender of Japan.
