Island hopping was a technique used in WWII. Japan had troops stationed on islands in the Pacific. Instead of engaging the garrisons the navy would skip the island and atttack the next one, basically stranding the Japanaese garrisons on the islands until the end of the war.
In 1942, the Axis powers, particularly Germany and Japan, were facing significant challenges as they encountered setbacks on multiple fronts. The Soviet Union began to turn the tide against Germany after the Battle of Stalingrad, while the United States and its allies started to make progress in the Pacific against Japan. Overall, by the end of 1942, the Allies were gaining momentum, indicating a shift in the war's dynamics.
The 1942 "Europe First" strategy prioritized the defeat of Nazi Germany over immediate engagement in the Pacific theater, which led to a temporary reduction in resources and attention allocated to American forces fighting Japan. As a result, the U.S. initially faced challenges in the Pacific, including significant losses at battles like Coral Sea and Midway. However, this strategy ultimately allowed for a more coordinated and effective response once the American military shifted its focus to the Pacific, leading to successful campaigns and the eventual defeat of Japan.
In June 1942, the Battle of Midway took place, marking a pivotal moment in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The United States Navy, having broken Japanese codes, successfully ambushed and defeated a large Japanese fleet aiming to seize Midway Atoll. The battle resulted in the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers, significantly weakening Japan's naval strength and shifting the balance of power in the Pacific in favor of the Allies. This victory is often regarded as a turning point in the war.
