Adam (the main character in this novel) is a tall and slender boy, much like me. His father is a Navy Lieutenant on the ship USS Arizona. Adam and his family move to Hawaii because Lt. Pelko (Adam's father) has been stationed there. We start out with Adam at school, and how he struggles to answer his Teacher's questions about where he's from, where his hometown is, all the questions a Teacher would ask a freshman. Adam doesn't know how to answer the questions because he's always been in the Military. Military friends, Military schools, Military everything. He's never been to a civilian school. He soon makes friends with Davi, a Japanese-American kid who lives in the Chinatown part of Honolulu. Davi introduces Adam to one of his friends, Martin, who is a plump Hawaiian that believes everything comes from the Hawaiian Gods. Adam's father doesn't like the idea of his son hanging out with Davi because they're in the middle of World War II and on the verge of war with Japan. Adam decides to secretly hang out with his friends and one day, Sunday, he decides to go out on what was supposed to be a fishing trip with his friends. He ends up in the middle of things. Adam soon goes from being a kid to being a Soldier. He eventually, through acting like a Soldier with a gun, gets home to his mother and sister, Bea. Adam has an adventurous time trying to find answers about his friends and his father. He ends up being sent back to the mainland with his mother and Bea, but says he's abandoning his father.
