Look at the different roles in society filled by Iranian women in the novel and you could comment on how Marji differs from the expectations of a typical women in Iranian society. What roles does she accept and decline?- mother, wife, cook, rebel, sexual being, political protestor, etc.

Remember, Iran was a much freer society pre-1979 esp. re. the rights and freedoms of women, so having to cover their bodies (enforced wearing of hijab) may not come easily to even the older women who remember a different political regime.
