Generally, in wartime, spies know that if captured, spies of any nation in any war are likely to be shot. They are not often captured, however, and if captured are often not executed.

Spies would either change their identity and pretend to be from either the south(confederacy) or the north (union). Women spies would charm the navy men into telling them their secrets. Men had a harder job trying to be spies. Men had to be good at lying and just make them say it out loud on accident. Yes, and children were spies as well, even more common than adult or teenage spies. They were less conspicuous as they could simply run around the military camps and listen in on plans the enemys were making.

The memoirs of Loreta Velasquez give a riveting account of this lady's wartime espionage on behalf of the Confederates, though the scenes of her front-line infantry service in Union army (male) uniform are not believable.
