The Total Soldier Concept revolves around the structure of a Soldier being built using multiple, strong "pillars". Just like you cannot construct a fully sound building with only one or two strong pillars, the same goes for the formation of a model Soldier. The pillars that make up the foundation for a good Soldier are as follows:
Technically Proficient: Knowing their job, at their level and all levels below them, and able to produce positive results. Well-rounded in their job, not just specialized in one particular duty position for their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)
Tactically Proficient: Knowing how to effectively employ their equipment and personnel in combat. Knowing the common warrior skills and tasks that are required to fight, survive and win in combat.
Self Motivated: Not needing to be led every step of the way to complete a task. Practices initiative. Does not need to be constantly reminded to complete tasks. Does not need to be told what to do constantly. Pays attention to detail.
Appearance: Maintains their uniforms and personal grooming to standard. Looks like a professional Soldier.
Military Bearing: Displays respect for superiors, peers and subordinates. Utilizes tact. Knows and follows military standards and regulations. Acts like a professional Soldier. Disciplined. Supports chain of command.
Physically Fit: Able to regularly pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) and body fat content standards.
Mentally Fit: Able to focus on the accomplishment of the mission. Practices sound judgement, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Not easily distracted. Able to keep their personal life from affecting performance of their duties. Able to accept criticism.
Communicator: Able to effectively communicate intent in a professional manner. Adapts their communications to the situation and individual(s). Receptive to and provides feedback.
Educated: Seeks self-improvement not only professionally, but also within their personal life. Able to effectively write with proper grammar and spelling. Pays attention to proper formatting when writing, producing well-structured products.
