It was ground artillery wars that led to the construction and use of trenches in combat. These trenches provided military members with an adequate area to position themselves against opposing forces that took them out of the direct line of hand artillery.
They were used for hand to hand combat if the enemy jumped into their trenches. This was the first war with extensive use of trench warfare.

ANZAC soldiers often slept in makeshift camps or trenches during World War I, depending on their location. In the trenches, they would use dugouts or bunkers for shelter, which provided some protection from the elements and enemy fire. At times, they also slept in tents when conditions allowed, though these were less common in combat zones. Overall, their sleeping arrangements were basic and far from comfortable, reflecting the harsh realities of war.
Vertical Envelopment, or the use of helicopters in combat, was first introduced in the Korean war.
Trench warfare during World War I was characterized by the extensive use of deep, fortified trenches where soldiers lived and fought for extended periods. Conditions were often horrific, with soldiers facing mud, disease, and the constant threat of enemy fire. The stalemate created by trench warfare led to massive casualties and minimal territorial gains, exemplified in battles like the Somme and Verdun. This brutal form of combat highlighted the technological advancements of the time and its devastating impact on human life.
The common use of Machine Guns in infantry warfare gave birth to the need for Trenches.

Reserve trenches were used as supplies for the trenches out the front. In world war one, they had come up with a technique of hiding in trenches before they fight. To do this properly, they had made them zig-zags. The trenches on the front line were where the soldiers would fight from. Reserve trenches were used in case these people had anything happen to them and they needed to use more trenches and more men. Throughout the war, the conditions of the front line trenches became worse as the communication and reserve trenches improved. I hope that helped :)
