On June 28, 1914 the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, was killed. This caused an excuse for declarations of war. Actual combat started a month later, starting with Austria-Hungary invading Serbia.

Europe before World War I was a snarl of international competition, diplomatic tension and overlapping alliances and treaties between nations for support in case of attack or invasion. There was a general feeling at a war was inevitable and everyone was getting themselves into as powerful a position as possible before it started. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is often identified as the "spark" that started it all but anything would have done.
