The answer to a multiple choice question is "a lack of political alliances" because the exact OPPOSITE was the major contributing factor.

Too many treaties bound powerful nations to defend smaller allies, leading to the inclusion of most of Europe in the war, along with the Ottoman Empire and eventually the US. Of course, Germany used this only as a pretext to join Austria-Hungary and seek even greater expansion than they gained in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71).

Almost everything did not cause World War 1. You could list things like:

  • Julius Caesar's invasion of Britain
  • The defeat of Hannibal
  • The election of James K Polk as President of the US
  • the formation of the Western Electric company

and so many other events that it is not worth trying to do so.
