Actually, the U.S. did NOT fight Afghanistan, it was the Soviets who invaded Afghanistan. The U.S. provide military "advisors" who taught the Afghanistans how to drive the Russians out. The freedom fighters of Afghanistan were more than happy to have U.S. help up to the point when the Soviets were driven out. Then they turned against the U.S. Many of the weapons that we provided to fight the Soviets were used against our military when we went after Bin Laden.

Essentially the US is not at war with Afghanistan. It is the war on terrorism. The US is trying to fight terrorism (and Osama Bin Laden) because of the attacks of September 11th, 2001. The reason the US went into Afghanistan territory is because they had reason to believe he was hiding somewhere near there.

At this time, essentially the U.S. government wants to maintain some leverage or control over the region. They see that the supply of oil from the fields in the Mid East as being an issue of "National Security".

However, the original reasons for fighting various Mid Eastern tribes such as the Taliban (suspected to be hiding in Afghanistan) is the result of the CIA funding the Talibans operations again the Russians during the cold war and their relationship (Taliban-US) over time becoming "sour".

The US covertly (e.g., secretly) supplied weapons and training to the mujahadeen, the Afghans fighting against the Russian and Afghan Army. Our old friend Osama bin Laden was one of them. After the Russians were kicked out of Afghanistan (just another in the long line of invaders who have been kicked out, from Alexander the great on up...) we could have stayed there and fixed the country back up and made them our allies but we didn't. We left, the Taliban came in to the picture, and that was that. That led to al Quaeda, 9/11 and the current conflict there. There's a good chance that had we gone to Afghanistan and build a couple of hospitals, a school or three, and maybe some roads, we wouldn't be in the pickle we are now, and 9/11 would never have happened.
The US supported the Taliban against the Soviet occupation. It provided covert guns, ammunition, intelligence and cash through Pakistan.

Remember World Trade Center

This war was being fought a long time before 9/11. Initial the U.S. saw the Afghans as a friend in the fight against Russia. However, the Afghans felt hard done by when the U.S. government pulled out (funding was cut to various groups within Afghanistan, support was reduced significantly etc.). As a result, what were considered to be allies, ended up becoming a sour relationship. At this time, the U.S. started performing missions in Afghanistan since at least the 70's from what I have read (I cannot find the exact time frame when this started), in an attempt to "subdue" the locals.

However, our friends comment has some truth to it. The events of 9/11 were a means of the U.S. government to step up their efforts and (unfortunately), include Iraq.

The US ousted the Taliban Regime that was ruling Afghanistan and allowing Al-Qaeda to use there territory as a base of operations for terrorist actions.

Was Vietnam a war or police action?

1. A war is fighting another nation (THEIR AIR FORCE, NAVY, & ARMY). Was the US fighting against a nation in Vietnam? Yes, the country called North Vietnam. 2. Was the US fighting a nation in WWII? Yes , the US was fighting Germany & Japan (yes and Italy, but they surrendered so quickly, historians often leave them out of the debate). 3. Was the US fighting a nation in the war of 1812? Yes, the nation called Great Britain. A Police Action or Law Enforcement Action is fighting against terrorists (Criminals or Insurgents) who have no nation (if they did the US would attack that nation, destroying terrorists would be EASIER THEN!). The United States is NOT fighting against the nations of Iraq nor Afghanistan. Therefore the United States of America is NOT at war with those nations. Those are police actions...the restoring of law, order, and stability to those regions...or at least in Afghanistan, the capturing or killing of terrorists.
