Surely you jest because as a major slave holding state it was certainly allied with the Confederate States of America and it seceded from the Union in January of 1861 and had Montgomery as the first Capital of the Confederacy.

California was not yet a state during the Civil War. Therefore, they did not participate in it. Also,the War did not stretch that far west, so there would be no need for any possible settlers already in that area to take up arms and fight for one side or the other. * This above is not accurate, more info can be found here: http://www.militarymuseum.org/HistoryCW.html CA became a state in 1850, CA sent troops which fought on the side of the Union. *
