People listened to the wireless, went to the movie theaters to see newsreels and films at the cinema, read, played the piano and went to dances, though women were partnered due to most men being conscripted.
Dance Halls soon became popular places for entertainment and a place to start many blossoming romances. Many new dance venues were opened to meet the demand. The Trocadero was a popular dance venue with one being established in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. They each featured a full orchestra. As many as 2,000 dancers could pack the dance floor of the Brisbane Trocadero. The Americans introduced the Jitterbug and the Jive to the young Australian women. Hope that helps!
During World War 2 and all the centuries before the end of world war 2 people did not have televisions, Video Games, techno gadgets or cellular phones. People had the best time playing games, listening to records and radios, playing cards, playing instruments, visiting friends and relatives, going to movies and traveling around.
The war put a damper on travel due to gasoline restrictions. Otherwise everything else went on as before but they had added activities of war bond fund raising, rolling bandages, writing letters to the servicemen, consoling and aiding those who lost their loved ones and doing volunteer work in the hospital or other places needing help. Young adults entertained the servicemen at dance parties. Bizarres and other fundraisers were held. Kids did real homework right out of books and on paper. The young kids played games like hopscotch, Red Rover, Statues, Red Light Green Light, and hide and seek. Girls like to play jacks, Chinese jump rope, jumping rope, dolls and played house or school. Kids made up their own games. Boys liked to play war. People went to the library and checked out books.
