Even as late as the invasion of Russia much of the wehrmachts artillery was horse drawn, summer 1941, but in terms of men on horseback the German cavalry had been replaced by the Panzer (Armoured) forces. The conspicuous bravery of the Polish lancers who attacked tanks in 1939 is unimaginable. The last fully mounted regimental parade by a British regiment was in India in 1939.

Did cavalry units in World War 2 carry grenades?

Calvary units were not a common sight during World War Two, because many leaders saw them as obsolete once the tanks came into play. Grenades were only used in bunker or urban warfare and since it would be pointless attacking a bunker or a building on horseback they were not issued to Calvary troops. They might have been issued if they were forced to battle tanks but thT would have been unlikely if you' re interested in Calvary troops during World War Two check out Mongolia.

What were the expectations for effective calvary charges as the US Civil War began?

Based on the success of calvary charges during the Mexican American War, military leaders on both sides of the US Civil War were of the opinion that tactical offensive charges by calvary units would be effective. There were enough successful calvary charges against infantry troops on both sides, to cause them to continue throughout the war. With that said, cavalry charges were not the backbone of plans for a successful battle. They were used with caution, but yes, they were a part of many battles.
