Because the war couldn't be isolated (Ho Chi Minh Trail) without expanding the war into other countries (Laos & Cambodia), and possibly involving the communist superpowers (USSR & Red China)...which "DID" happen during the Korean War (1950-1953). The Korean War occurred on a peninsula; which allowed the US to isolate the war to only that one region.
