Sherman's goal was to split the southern Confederacy in half. To do this he and his troops burned bridges, supplies, crops and anything that could be deemed useful by the Confederate army.

His goal was to destroy the rich farmland of Georgia, in order to starve the Confederate troops in the field. He ordered the burning of crops and the slaughter of livestock, but strictly forbade violence against civilians. When this did happen, it was usually at the hands of the mounted vandals - deserters from both sides - who rode alongside thre army for the food and the pickings. The campaign was highly successful, shortening the war by months at almost nil casualties.
