WWII actually started in July, 1937 between the Chinese and Japanese. It started in Europe in September, 1939 with Nazi Germany invading Poland. At first, the Nazis were unstoppable. They conquered almost all of Europe and a large chunk of Russia by the end of 1942. The Japanese did a similar job in Asia and the Pacific Islands after bombing Pearl Harbor in December, 1941. By 1943 the Allies had stopped the Axis and started to force them back. The Nazis surrendered first in May, 1945 with Japan giving up in August, 1945 and making it official, with a formal surrender ceremony, in September, 1945.

the first phase went from September 1939 to June 1940
the second phase went from June 1940 to July 1943
the third phase went from July 1940 to June 1944
the fourth and last phase was from June 1944 to September 1945
Actually there were 4, but the last 2 aren't very famous. (These are listed in order of importance.) 1st, Europe. Obviously, the largest allied goal was to invade Germany and liberate France. 2nd, the Pacific. The Japanese conquered most islands in the Pacific, and the US Navy and Marines had to take them back. 3rd, the CBI (China-Burma-India) theater. The Japanese army invaded took over 1/4 of China, and some of Burma had been invaded as well. Also, the US didn't want the Japanese to invade India. Finally, North Africa and the Middle East. Vichy France (a puppet state set up by the Germans-officialy they were France, but they were really under control of the Germans) owned most of North Africa.
