Turkey entered the second world war symbolically on the side of the allied forces, during the last few official days of the war. Turkey did not participate on any active war front during this war. The reason, if I am not mistaken, was to be identified with the winning side and somewhat erase the losing image left from the first world war. I am not sure if it is available in English, but there is a 3 volume set of books called as "ikinci adam" (translation: second man), which gives a detailed life story of Ismet Inonu, who was the president and the prime minister of Turkey at that time and there was a good section about this subject.

The Ottoman Empire signed a secret treaty with Germany in August 1914 against a common Russian enemy.

The Ottoman Empire which had been neutral during the first few months of the war, finally came out on the side of the Central powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) after giving refuge to the German battlecruiser SMS Goeben and the light cruiser SMS Breslau.

the reason was that two German warships (Goeben and Breslau) escaping from British navy were bought by the Ottomans. Then these warships (the German officer still had the command and the crew remained unchanged) entered ports in the Black Sea and attacked Russian ports

The pursuit of Goeben and Breslau was a naval action that occurred in the Mediterranean Sea at the outbreak of the First World War when elements of the

British Mediterranean Fleet attempted to intercept the German Mittelmeerdivision (Mediterranean Division) comprising the battlecruiser SMS Goeben and the light cruiser SMS Breslau. The German ships evaded the British fleet and passed through the Dardanelles to reach İstanbul where their arrival was a catalyst that contributed to the Ottoman Empire joining the Central Powers by issuing a declaration of war against the Triple Entente.

Continued diplomacy from France and Russia attempted to keep Ottoman Empire out of the war, but Germany was agitating for a commitment. In the aftermath of Souchon's daring dash to İstanbul, Turkey on 15 August 1914 cancelled her maritime agreement with Britain and the Royal Navy mission under Admiral Limpus left by 15 September. Finally on 29 October, the point of no return was reached when Admiral Souchon took Goeben, Breslau and a squadron of Turkish warships into the Black Sea and raided the Russian ports of Odessa, Sevastopol and Theodosia. Russia declared war on Ottoman Empire on 2 November and Britain followed suit on 5 November.

With the Ottoman Empire at war, new theatre was opened, Middle Eastern theatre of World War I with main fronts of Gallipoli, the Sinai and Palestine, Mesopotamia, and in Caucasus. The course of the war in the Balkans was also influenced by the entry of the Ottoman Empire on the side of the Central Powers.

The involvement of Ottomans in the world war was beneficiary to both sides. Germans had a new ally and Triple Alliance now had all the rights to attack and share the lands of the Ottoman Empire, aka "the sick man of Europe"

* the name of the cruises Goeben and Breslau were changed as Yavuz and Midilli, respectiely .

yavuz: named after Sultan Selim (ruler of Ott. Emp . between 1512-1520)

midilli: (translated to English as-pony), an old Turkish island in Aegean sea (aka Lesbos)

TurkeyMain article: Single-party period of the Republic of Turkey#1938-1950: İnönü (National Chief)

Turkey was neutral until several months before the end of the war, at which point it joined the Allies. The president Ismet Inonu did his best to keep Turkey out of the war despite pressure from Nazi Germany and the Western Allies. During the War, Turkey helped the Jewish Community by protecting those who made it to Turkey. Later, most of the Jewish people who lived in Turkey during the War moved to Israel.[citation needed]
