Yes, he did. He received a total of three draft deferments: one on October 19th, 1967; one on December 12th, 1968, and one on November 17th, 1969. When the guy who is always ranting about communists, socialists, Marxists and leftists had a chance to fight communism in the jungles of South Vietnam, he chose to run away to Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. Early in the war (prior to 1967) there was very little anti-war activity. By 1968, leading figures nationwide were opposed to the war: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boxer Mohammed Ali Senator Robert Kennedy Vice President Hubert Humphrey Senator Eugene McCarthy Newsman Walter Cronkhite Chicago Seven By 1970, antiwar and anti-draft movements were on every campus in the country. 56% of the American people called the war a 'mistake'. Black and Chicano opposition to the war grew, especially after the killing of a Mexican-American newsman covering a protest. In 1971, Senator J William Fulbright began a series of Senate hearings into the war. The first antiwar veteran to speak was future Senator John Kerry. Also in 1971, the Senate dealt a blow to the war support by repealing the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that had allowed the president to fight a war without a declaration of war.
Because it was the cold war, a mobilization of military reserves would be a sign to the Soviets, that the US was raising it's military defensive posture, which could also mean offensive status. Consequently, the Soviets (and/or Red China) would be obligated to counter this move, by mobilizing their military reserves. The cold war would begin to "warm up", raising world tensions. Therefore, US presidents decided to fight the Vietnam War with conscripts (draftees); approximately 40,000 men a month were fed into the war machine by 1968. This caused anti-draft protests & riots.
Approximately 500,000 servicemen were in Vietnam in 1968.

Johnson played 12 seasons with the Bengals (1968-1979) and is the only player in Bengals history, as of the 2007 season, to have his number officially retired. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
