In World War II, Churchill thought he could keep casualties down by attacking Germany through the 'soft underbelly' of Italy rather than the cross-channel invasion through France advocated by both the Americans and Canadians. Remember, Britain lost nearly a million men in World War I. As it was, Italy was still a difficult and costly campaign.

Operation Underbelly was the first allied attack on Europe to stop the Nazi regime. The attack was made on Italy but was not very successful and the troops got stuck and later pulled out. Then in 1944 Operation Overloard with the landings at Normandy was started.
