The transportation route that extended from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois is known as the National Road. It is a 620 mile road that was built by the federal government. In 2002 it was officially designated as "The Historic National Road, an All-American Road."
The first contracts were given in 1811, and the construction was delayed until 1815 due to the War of 1812.
Baltimore, Maryland The first federally funded part of the National Road starts in Cumberland, MD and runs to Wheeling, WV. The second part starts from Wheeling and continues to Vandalia Illinois. The part from Baltimore to Cumberland, was financed by the Maryland banks who agreed to build a turnpike from Baltimore to Cumberland as part of their agreement to renew their state charters.

The Erie Canal was completed October 26, 1825. The National Road was partially completed in 1818 as far as Wheeling. It reached Vandalia (an early capital of Illinois), Illinois in the 1830's.
