Life was pretty hard for anyone living in 1865. The civil war was going on. Some people had slaves, and some people freed slaves. It was hard, especially since many products weren't available. Depression hit many towns as many people lost family members and slaves. A child would have to expect to work in farms and there wasn't school for girls.
Lincoln served from 1861 to 1865; Johnston from 1865 to 1869. Grant took office in 1869. (The war ended in 1865.)

During this time, the population of Spanish, French, and English settlers in North America steadily increased. In 1776, the United States declared its independence from Great Britain, and the U.S. Civil War lasted from 1861 until 1865.

The Union Army captured Richmond in 1865, which was the capital of the Confederate States of America. Shortly after that Robert E. Lee surrendered.
