If you mean the northern states, they fought in the Civil War. Other than that one time, the US has always been united. Any wars which involved the north, involved the entire US. The US has, of course, fought in two world wars and many other wars.
The US fought three wars to obtain land: 1. Indian Wars (1620-1890) 2. Mexican War (1846-1848) 3. Spanish-American War 1898
The ongoing Frontier Wars were being fought by the US Army up until 1890. In 1876 the US Army lost a battle to the Sioux at the Little Big Horn. The US Civil War was fought between 1861-1865. War with Mexico from 1846 to 1848. War with Britain in 1812.
WW2 was the last declared war fought by the United States. Declared wars traditionally have to be fought as total wars...otherwise there is no valid reason for declaring war in the first place. Therefore, Declared wars can no longer be fought, since total wars can no longer be fought; due to NUCLEAR WEAPONS. Nuclear weapons can only bring "Mutually Assured Destruction" to both combatants. Consequently the new term of LIMITED WARS were fought against communist aggression in the Korean War & Vietnam Wars. Limited to "Conventional Weapons Only."
World War 1 and World War 2 were the last declared wars that the US participated in.I'm sure however that there have been small regional warsafter World War 2, that the US did not participate in that were declared wars by the regional participants in those wars.
