The official goal of the North at the beginning of the Civil War was to try adn preserve the Union. The Abolishment of Slavery was not intended. It happened to come about through the war. The main goal however of Abraham Lincoln at the beginning of the Civil War was to preserve the Union and bring it back together as painlessly as possible. Unfortunately he was assassinated before he could put his plans into affect during the post Civil War period.

During the US Civil War, the North's official goal in the West was pictured in Commanding General Winfield Scott's "Anaconda Plan". It was control of the Mississippi River and its tributary rivers as the key to isolating and defeating the Confederacy West "in detail". The river gunboats built at Mound City in southern Illinois and commanded by Captain Andrew Foote were strategic on the upper Mississippi River and its tributaries. The Navy fleet captured New Orleans and controlled the lower Mississippi under Admiral David Farragut (born Hispanic, raised a Virginian). The last strategic citadel of Confederate Vicksburg fell to General Ulysses S. Grant.
