One thing that gave the south an edge in the beginnings of the Civil War was the fact that the north had to come to them. This gave the south the advantage of being in their own area where they were comfortable and knew the land.

Here are some advatages for the South. YOu can decide which is the greatest.

  • The South was fighting to mantain their way of life. Most of the battles were on their home soil where they were fighting to defend their homes. There was no question of giving up the fight unlike in the North.
  • The South had Robert E. Lee and other good officers. Their military command was better organized at the beginning of the war.
  • The South had more men who were already skilled horsemen, thus helping their calvary units. They probably had more men who hunted and already knew how to fire and aim a gun.

The South was defending their homelands and so they had knowledge of the terrain, and had the motive to actively fight for their homeland.
