Prior to the Civil War the United States Steel Corp. was Suwanee Mining Co.
The merger that created USS included the Tennessee Coal and Iron Co, which had relocated its operations (both mining and steel producing) to Ensley, Alabama.
The Ensley mills were acquired for only a fraction of their actual value in a deal brought by the President of the United States and many prominent banking industry leaders.
There are several books available on this subject one of which was published by USS in Mid to late 2000. Also look up the history of Suwanee Mining Co. you will find that there is a very interesting past.
