A walkover for the Confederates.

The Union plan to cross the river and invade the heights was perfectly sound. But the pontoons they needed had got lost in transit, and by the time they arrived, Lee had manned the heights.

The victory was so overwhelming that Lee was actually seen to dance around, hugging other officers - the only time that this deeply reserved aristocrat was ever seen to let his dignity go.
