About the cause of the Civil War, during his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln said

QUOTE

One eight of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was, somehow, the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend these interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union, even by war; while the government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it. Neither party expected for the war, the magnitude, or the duration, which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with, or even before, the conflict itself should cease. Both read the same Bible.......

1) state's rights - the south felt like they weren't treated equally

2) sectionalism - favoring one section or state rather than the whole country

3) slavery - the south needed slaves for farming, the north was mostly industry so they didnt need slaves. most of the northerners (and some southerners) didn't think slavery was right

4) Money - The South was making more money by exporting farm goods to Europe that the North was by manufactured goods. Taxes and tarriffs were added to equalize the budget. The farmers wanted to keep their own profits.
