Compiegne was the place in France where Germany officially agreed to the armistice that ended the war. It took place in one of the cars in the train belonging to the French general, Foch.

In 1940, when Germany defeated France in World War II, Hitler made the French sign their surrender in the same train car that the Germans had surrendered in in 1918 (the French had made it into a memorial). Afterward, Hitler had the train destroyed except for the one car, which was destroyed later as Germany lost that war too.
