The defeat of Russia enabled Germany to transfer troops to the Western Front, but not in the numbers they had hoped for, as they had unexpectedly serious problems on the Eastern Front with groups as diverse as Bolshevists and Ukrainian nationalists. Russia' defeat also fed fantasies about boundless German expansion in Eastern Europe - fantasies that played a key role in Hitler's thinking.

Russia dropped out of World War I due to the events of the February Revolution and the abdication of the Tsar. Russia pulling out of the war broke up the Triple Entente, although the eventual entry of the United States still pushed the war in the allies favor.

After three years of fighting, Russia bowed out of World War I in 1917 mainly as a result of internal conflict stemming from the Communist revolution against Russia's imperial government. Although the Communists soon took control of the state, their revolution undermined the war effort against Germany (and its allies) and led to a harsh peace treaty. This treaty allowed Germany to send troops to the Western Front and stage another great offensive against the Western Allies in 1918.

Russia had a revolution which is why they left. It also meant that France and Britain were the only two left fighting. Russia, on the east of Germany, forced them to fight a two front war, which was what Germany was aiming to avoid. Germany was forced to split their army to fight on the Western Front against France as well as on the Eastern Front against Russia. When Russia left, Germany could focus solely on the Western Front and France.

The war on Germany was no longer being fought on two fronts. All of the allied forces were on the West, meaning Germany could focus their full forces on the Western front.
