Berlin, April, 1945. As the Capital city of the Reich, Berlin was defended to the upmost. It fell to the Soviet Red Army, after a few days of intense combat. The Germans signed a un-conditional surrender document, that acknowledged that they were defeated and that all German units must stop fighting.

May 7 and May 8, 1945 The Germans signed the military surrender documents on May 7, 1945, in Reims, France and on May 8 in Berlin, Germany. The Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, refused to accept the surrender signed in Rheims - probably because he suspected the motives of the Western Allies and Germany. He insisted the treaty be ratified in Berlin the following day, so Moscow celebrated VE Day one day later than the rest of Europe.
