There is no definitive answer to this questions. Battles could and did vary greatly depending on terrain, weapons available and deployed, weather, room to maneuver, whether the battle was on land, at sea, or in the air, etc. It's probably fair to say, though, that the typical, full-scale battle (as opposed to small-unit actions) employed these elements:

1. Heavy firepower, including artillery, bombs delivered by air, machine guns, and the like. Surviving in this battlefield environment usually meant digging into the earth or using armor (tanks, armored personnel carriers, etc.) to deflect blasts and projectiles from some of the less powerful weapons.

2. Mechanized maneuver: WWI was characterized by the triumph of the defensive, fortified position over the unarmored attacker. By WWII, tanks and other, armored vehicles had changed the equation between attacker and attacked, allowing attackers to beat fixed defensive positions if there was enough firepower, and firepower of the right kind. Note that there was little room to maneuver on the islands that the US took from the Japanese, so these battles were generally not characterized by maneuver.

3. The triumph of air forces: At sea, aircraft carriers became the dominant, capital ship, replacing the battleship in this role. Aircraft launched from aircraft carriers acted as sort of long-range, guided artillery. Bombs and torpedos launched from aircraft had much greater range, and were far more effective, than the large guns on battleships.

On land, having air superiority (the ability to patrol the battlefield and apply munitions to the enemy) almost always meant winning the battle. As on the sea, aircraft acted as long range, guided artillery and/or machine guns that could be brought to bear anywhere on the battlefield.

This is just an overview. There were many permutations to the experience a soldier would have had on a WWII battlefield.
