Many people would say that the British stand at El Alamein is one. Others would say that Operation Torch would be another. And to a degree I would agree, but one of the most overlooked impact was Malta. The supply situation to Rommel's DAK was always bad. If they had ever implemented Operation Hercules (the planned airborne assualt of Malta), this island aircraft carrier would have become a safe haven for Axis shipping and an air base for Axis air. This would also have forced the British to launch operations from Alexandria or Gibraltar. The added time would have been more wear and tear on the British ships and further drain on supplies. But the first two mentioned items were very big turning points for the Axis situation in Afrika. If Rommel had managed to penetrate the British defenses at El Alamein, then the road to Cairo and the Suez would have been open. The British would have had to fall back to the Suez Canal for the next defensible terrain feature. This would have yielded Egypt to the Axis, closed the Suez canal and forced supply routes around South Africa. And also remember the majority of Lend Lease to the Soviet Union went thru Iraq. If the Axis had succeeded here, then this major supply route would have been in serious jeopardy
it affected African nationalism
many of the African leaders at the time had been educated in European or American schools, and they knew how other countries governments worked. India had just gained it's independence from Britain, and Kwame Nkrumah (British educated leader of Ghana) realized that if Britain was so weak it could not even stay in control of India, it's most precious colony, they would not be able to hold on to a little nothing colony like Ghana - he began a nonviolence movement inspired by Gandhi in Ghana, and Ghana was the first African country to gain independence - this created a domino effect throughout Africa and after about 10 years from the start of Nkrumah's movement, all but 5 countries in Africa were independent. The Europeans left even faster than they came!
The African campaign (operation scorch) was an attack on north Africa by the allied force of American and British forces to capture and put an end to Germany's Afrika Korps.
